Speech
Condition
Severe dysarthria following a period of being nonverbal
Purpose To determine if the lingual-independent gesture related to rounding was affected to a higher degree in the context of conflicting gestures or if a preceding labial movement would help in reaching the lip rounding target.
Methods Subjects said 3 vowels, /i/, /y/, and  /u/ in words and were recorded.
Formant trajectories were estimated for the voiced segments.
The steady state sections of the vowels were segmented.
The formant frequencies of F1 and F2 were averaged over the stable portion of each vowel.
Results There were no dissociated defects of labial and lingual motility.
The degree of undershoot of the gestures was dependent on the context conditions.
The subjects used anticipatory coarticulation to achieve targets.
