Intervention Referral

Alan was referred to assess whether or not he would benefit from technology that was being used in the classroom.  Other students in the class were using Intellitalk 2.  Alan had good keyboarding and mousing access skills.

Previous Intervention

Alan had previously used Intellipics at home and in preschool.  He had accessed stories that were pre-programmed for him.  Most of the stories required Alan to click anywhere on the screen to change the page.
Assessment Summary

Literacy Needs:  Alan needed an independent activity that was academically relevant.  He is at a pre-literacy level.

Summary of Technology Assessment: The technology that was assessed was limited to what was available in the classroom.  Intellitalk 2 is a program that the classroom teacher had obtained and was using with some higher functioning students.  Alan is able to use the mouse to close windows on the computer so the assumption was made that he would be able to access most any size target on the screen.

Summary of Intervention

Consultation with the classroom teacher revealed that Alan was working on sequencing and concepts such and top to bottom and left to right.  To address these goals stories that Alan was familiar with were set up in Intellitalk 2 that he could read.  The stories had single sentences programmed in picture buttons on the screen.  Alan could click on the button and read sentence by sentence.  The computer would read and highlight word by word to assist in visual tracking.  The other set-ups that were done focused on composition.  Alan was able to create novel sentences by clicking on different buttons.  The set-up had nouns pictured on one side of the screen and verbs on the other.  Alan could combine the icons and create sentences.

Outcome Updates

May 2001-  The classroom has been utilizing the program for about six months.  Alan spends a portion of every day independently working on reading and writing skills.  Other students in the classroom have also begun to use the program.  The teacher has created some more complex set-ups that target other IEP goals.
