IntelliKeys is an expanded keyboard that can be used with any Macintosh (except Mac Plus, Mac 512 and Mac 128), Apple IIE, Apple IIGS and IBM AT, IBM XT or IBM PS/2, PS/1 (or compatible computer).  The IntelliKeys package comes with the Keyboard, 2 manuals, one cable, and 7 premade overlays.

Connector Cables:

The same IntelliKeys keyboard can be used on all of the above mentioned computers.  There are 5 different connector cables that are available for use with the different computers.  However, be sure to use the appropriate connector cable for your computer model.  Check the end of the connector cable to make sure that it matches your computer model.

Connecting the IntelliKeys to the Computer

1. MAKE SURE THAT THE COMPUTER IS TURNED OFF WHENEVER CONNECTING INTEILLIKEYS.

2. Connect the appropriate connector cable to the keyboard port in the back of the computer.

3. Connect the standard keyboard to the IntelliKeys connector cable.

4. Connect the IntelliKeys keyboard to the other end of the connector cable.

**You can use the IntelliKeys and the standard keyboard at the same time.

Memory Usage:

IntelliKeys occupies no memory in your computer and should not interfere with the operation of any application.  IntelliKeys has built-in memory of its own (32K), that is battery supported.  IntelliKeys uses this memory to retain any settings you make when using the Setup overlay.  It retains these settings even when your computer is turned off.

Overlays:

IntelliKey overlays can be described in 4 distinct groups:

1. 4 elementary overlays (arrows, alphabet, numbers, basic writing).

2. 2 QWERTY overlays (for Apple and IBM).

3. The Setup overlay (to adjust keyboard features. It is not for typing).

4. Custom overlays (available from commercial software companies or constructed using Overlay Maker software program).

**Please refer to the manual for suggested software applications that can be used with the premade IntelliKey overlays.

Installing Premade Overlays:

Each of the 7 premade overlays that comes with the IntelliKeys has a simple barcode on the back.  The IntelliKeys keyboard senses the barcode within moments after sliding the overlay in place.  Once the barcode is recognized, IntelliKeys will properly adjust to the overlay. You can only use I overlay at a time.

Installing Custom Overlays: (FOR USE WITH THE MAKE IT GO SOFTWARE PROGRAM)

To use custom overlays (like Make It Go software application):

1. Connect the IntelliKeys keyboard to the computer.

2. Place the custom overlay on the IntelliKeys.

3. Turn the computer on.

4. Start the desired software application (Make It Go) by clicking twice on the application icon.  (You can still use the mouse or the standard keyboard to access the program.)  You can follow the directions on the screen.

5. Click on IntelliKeys as the access method.

6. You can now use the IntelliKeys keyboard.

Each software application will automatically redefine the IntelliKeys keyboard to be used with its custom overlay.

Sequential Use of the Shift and Control Keys:

IntelliKeys was designed to allow for 1 key press at a time.  You cannot use 2 keys at the same time.  To make a capital letter:

1. Press the shift key, then release it.

2. Press the desired letter.

The shift key latches on when you press it down. It then automatically releases when the next key is pressed. The same is true for the control key.

Indicator Lights:

There are 3 indicator lights on the left side of the Intellikeys keyboard:  The top light indicates whether the shift key is latched on.  The middle light indicates whether the caps lock function is latched.  The bottom light indicates whether the IntelliKeys is functioning as a mouse.

Additional IntelliKeys Configurations:

1. Using IntelliKeys with No Overlay:  The keyboard will function as 2 big Keys.  You can redefine the 2 halves of the IntelliKeys using the CUSTOM OVERLAY LEVEL key on the Setup overlay.

2. IntelliKeys as an Apple Mouse:  You must activate the mouse functions. Using the Apple QWERTY overlay, press the mouse key in the upper left hand corner.  When the mouse key is activated:

The ARROW keys will become MOUSE ARROWS.
The RETURN key will become a MOUSE CLICK.
The right SHIFT key will become the locking click (click and drag)
The spacebar will become a double click.

You can toggle between the mouse and keyboard functions by pressing either the KEYBOARD or MOUSE key on the IntelliKeys as often as you like.  Mouse speed can be adjusted by:  inserting the setup overlay, pressing MOUSE SPEED key then pressing a number from 1 to 15 on the number pad (1 = slowest, 15 = fastest).

3. Using the 2 Switch jacks:  These are located on the left side of the IntelliKeys keyboard.  When switches are used, they have different functions depending on which computer you use and which overlay is in place.  There are 11 different switch functions that can be adjusted using the CUSTOM OVERLAY LEVEL key on the Setup overlay.

4. Basic Setup Overlay Functions:  Using this overlay you can adjust:  the response rate; turn repeat on or off; adjust the repeat rate and change the apple mouse speed.  The setup overlay has a Test Pad area to check the effect of your selections.  After adjusting the settings, simply return to one of the other overlays.  IntelliKeys retains your new settings.  If you want to return all of the features to their original settings, press the FEATURE RESET key on the setup overlay TWICE.

5. Access Features Chart:  This Chart can be found in the Access Features Guide.  This guide describes specific Intellikey features that are designed solely to benefit individuals with disabilities.  The guide also discusses adaptive equipment that can be used with the IntelliKeys.  Please refer to the guide for additional information.
