cannot speak

Persons with ALS often accommodate to

maintain speech intelligibility-- by slowing

speaking rate

Speech intelligibility is a poor predictor,

because deterioration of speech can be

very rapid

Once speaking rate is 50% of normal, move

toward AAC system
